John Ashenden
Elementary Principal PreK-Grade 5
John Ashenden joins GEMS American Academy as the Elementary Principal for PreK–Grade 5, bringing over two decades of experience in international and Canadian education. He has served as a principal in Ontario and in Indigenous communities, as well as in leadership roles in Egypt and China.
In the upcoming school year, he will lead the elementary division with a focus on improving teaching and learning through the Teach Like a GEM framework, increasing lesson rigor, and building a culture of collaboration. His leadership philosophy centers on building strong relationships, fostering teacher growth, and creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments for all students and teachers.
John has extensive experience with curriculum development, teacher professional growth, and trauma-informed practices. He is passionate about integrating outdoor and land-based learning to connect students to their environment and make learning meaningful.
Originally from Ontario, Canada, John holds a wealth of experience working with diverse school communities. He is excited to work alongside the GAA team to enhance student achievement, strengthen community engagement, and inspire a love of learning.
