All About Us!
GEMS American Academy – Abu Dhabi (GAA) is the first of many planned American schools that are modeled after the highly successful and sought after Dubai American Academy. Opened in September 2007, GAA benefits from the experience of our sister school in providing an outstanding college preparatory educational program in the English language to students from around the world. Although we are a new school, we have the advantage of a mature program that is wrapped in a small school feel and helps us nurture a culture of kindness in which every child is unique.
GAA will expand in size and scope again in 2009-2010. Our program will add another grade level taking us up to a Kg1 (4-year old program) to Grade 7. GAA will continue to add grade levels yearly to eventually lead to an IB/US Grade 12 diploma (subject to authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization).
Our staff teach and inspire excellence in academics and life-long learning by continually reviewing and building an enriched American curriculum, promoting student achievement, encouraging integrity and nurturing a desire to learn. Although our standards-based curriculum focuses on academic achievement, extra and co-curricular activities play an important role in the development of well-rounded students and world citizens. GAA believes that interactions outside the classroom are just as important as the ones inside as they give students an opportunity to develop their emotional and social intelligences.
Facilities
Conveniently located in the heart of Abu Dhabi, GAA provides state-of-the-art facilities for student life and learning. The u-shaped campus centers around a purpose-built, child-friendly courtyard with plenty of space to run and play. An outdoor artificial grass field can either be used by PE classes or pick-up soccer at recess.

Our 24 classrooms, each with its own adjacent computer mini-lab for research and differentiation activities, are grouped by grade level for a community feel. With an interactive Promethean smart board in each classroom, students can look forward to engaging lessons using the latest technology. A newly constructed specialist building hosts our library center, art suite, dedicated computer lab and Arabic studies room upstairs, while a cafeteria downstairs provides hot lunches and eating space for 200 students. Athletic facilities include a large gymnasium with built-in seating for 100. Two more covered outdoor play areas for the younger grades finish the facility’s child-friendly focus.
Required Qualifications for Teachers
The vast majority of our teachers hold a North American teaching certificate, academic degree or a comparable teaching qualification. In appointing teachers, preference is given to those who have had a minimum of four years of teaching experience, have previously taught internationally, are able to differentiate for the needs of all learners and have a comfort and competence with technology in the classroom.
GEMS American Academy – Abu Dhabi offers overseas hired teachers:
• competitive salary
• relocation allowance
• annual economy return flights
• medical and dental coverage
• free furnished accommodation
• free tuition for up to 2 dependants
• end of service gratuity
