Assembly Corner

Celebrating student work, individual or group accomplishments, cultural holidays, birthdays and more, assemblies last anywhere from 10-30 minutes and are usually held twice per month on Thursday mornings. These opportunities to build and practice public speaking skills help students to become comfortable in front of a large gathering starting at a young age. Students perform skits, read or recite speeches, present recent projects or a variety of other assembly ideas that teachers and assistants help to develop.

Developing this skill, however, goes beyond putting students in front of a large group. Becoming a confident public speaker can only happen if the school climate is one in which students are able to confidently take risks by feeling safe and do not have to worry about making mistakes in front of others. Building a culture of kindness is integral to students being willing to “put themselves out there” in front of others.

Teaching life skills is about developing abilities that complement a student’s academic progress. The ability to speak in front of large groups is a skill that students can draw upon throughout their lives long after they leave our schools. Make sure to make our assemblies a part of your day when you can!
