Teaching Methodology

Instructional objectives are clearly defined in all subject areas, but academic expectations are flexible enough to support and challenge individual learners. Beginning in Grade 1 with 10-20 minutes, 2-3 times per week (not including reading which is always encouraged) and building to 45-60 minutes, 4 times per wek in Grade 5, homework is an important part of the educational process to reinforce or extend daily classroom lessons. Instruction in all areas encourages students to grow as creative thinkers, critical reasoners and effective communicators. Technology, with Internet access in classrooms, libraries and lab, is integrated throughout our program as a support and not a standalone focus.

Academically, GAA prepares students to meet the challenge of a university education. Those who are exceptionally motivated may eventually choose to pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma, which qualifies students for entrance, and in many cases advanced placement, in most universities worldwide.

The large majority of GAA teachers are North American trained. Our teachers are expected to meet the needs of all learners by differentiating and extending for those who are at, below or above standard, while supporting English language learners. Once our class numbers reach a critical size, trained teaching assistants in every class from Kindergarten1 to Grade 3 and shared assistants in Grade 4 and 5 give teachers a powerful partner and resource with which to help each child reach their potential.
